Better Life with Better Bore Cleaning

For the best cleaning advice, go read some of the benchrest boards.

After spending $3,000-$4,000 on a benchrest rifle, these folks want to keep them shooting well.
What I have learned:
- Use a good one-piece cleaning rod.
- Use a bore guide.
- avoid ammonia-based copper cleaners.
- JB, USP, or Iosso bore paste works well.
- Use good patches.
- Kroil is good stuff.
- Custom barrels clean much easier than factory barrels.
I typically use moly-coated bullets. There is still a lot of controversy over this... either you love moly or you hate it.
My rifle cleaning routine goes like this:
- Mount rifle in rifle vice (or cleaning cradle)
- Remove bolt and insert bore guide
- Run 1 or 2 patches wet with Kroil down bore
- Scrub with a nylon brush (~1 cycle for each round fired)
- Run a few more Kroil-wet patches down bore
- Run a few dry patches down bore
If the rifle has not been shot a lot, then I finish with one oiled patch then clean/oil the outside surfaces of the rifle, put a tiny bit of grease on the locking lugs and store.
If the rifle has been shot a lot, then I jump right into the next steps:
- Carefully wrap patch on jag and load with JB bore paste
- Following instructions, clean bore with JB bore paste
- Run a few kroil-wet patches down bore
- Run a few dry patches down bore
- Run one oiled patch down bore
- clean outside, etc, and store.

Creamed Corn
You guys may be making a mistake, killing those magpies. Magpies and
crows and ravens can be great telltales of when a coyote or other predator
is on the way in. Also, on hard-hunted coyotes there is great technique
you can use: Get a can of creamstyle corn and color it bright red with
food coloring. Take an old coyote or other pelt and lay it on the ground
or snow and spread the corn around it. Use your call just enough to get
a magpie to show up, and the 'pie will attract others and all the ruckus
will attract predators. Try it.....it works. You will pull smart, experienced
'yotes you would never get with a rabbit call or howler. Good Hunting

Moly coated bullets
The discussion still continues, but it is generally accepted by the list
membership that moly coating bullets by any means does contribute to
improved accuracy, reduced barrel fouling and increased barrel life. The
methods of moly coating bullets include tumbling in vibrating tumbler,
tumbing in rotary tumbler, tumbling in vibrating tumbler with bullets and
moly inside a pill bottle, tumbling in vibrating tumbler with bullets and
moly inside a zip-lock bag, spray on moly and bullet slide to treat bullets
already loaded in brass.
This discussion is ongoing, we will update with future developments.
