Before I begin with this forum. I just want to make sure that a boy from Texas can post here about year round coyote hunting and all forms of pred. and varm. hunting. Ive tried other sites, but they did not take well to hunting in the summer. Even though i am from TX.(no fur trade) and my hunting is due to predation. To put things lightly, on the other forum i got a 2ft. hole ate out of my rear. Ive had horses ran through fences, and calves killed by yotes, with first hand knowledge on the calves. The other forum could not see my point of view, a little name callin and cussin was used to show how they felt about my actions. It left a pretty bad taste in my mouth.

I love to hunt, call, hunt, shoot, hunt, plink, hunt, tryin to reload, did i mention i love to hunt?

I just wanted to make sure that a Texas boy can discuss shootin yotes, fox, bobs and coons year round here without gettin shot himself.

Welcome to the forum. This is a great forum! You shouldn't have any worries here.I wish i could blast coyotes all year round. But the Govt here wants to give the doggies a rest so they can have a an undisturbed puppy making session. What is your main rig for hunting the dogs? A few of us reload, if you have questions just ask.

In my opinion, if it is not illegal then you are good to go.

If it would spin up the PETA folks, then you get bonus points.

There are some very knowledgeable folks on this site about reloading, varmint shooting, rifles, custom rifles, etc.... Ask a question and you have a VERY good chance of getting good info.

If anyone gives you grief that you don't earn, then chances are its from a friend who is rattling your cage

I saw what happened over on the black board.
No worries here.
I happen to be a fur hunter also. But REAL LIFE on a ranch dictates that you kill all coyotes on site. The ramblings of those not in the know, should not sway you from the task at hand.

I have lots of family & friends that live on ranches, I do dammage control when its needed, even when the fur is no good. Thier philosophy is, lost profits are more important than false morrals.

Coyotes are so hardy. No matter how hard the living conditions they still prosper. I have the up most respect for them. I think they are the ultimate predator..That's why i enjoy killing them so much, or at least try to..

Welcome aboard. I've found the people on this forum friendly and knowledgeable. You are in good company here and I doubt anyone will complain about anything done lawfully. If you can cause PETA to have a stroke so much the better. Happy hunting.

What is the big deal if you shoot them in the summer? They are mangy schroundls anyways. i wish I had year round yote smackin fun. Shoot I remember when I was Living in TX (Fort Hood) We were having a pool party on Christmas day once.

I was a member of the AZ Preditor Callers club in Mesa before movimg to SC. We stood down from the end of March to the first of Sept. from shooting preditors. We only shot in the summer if someone was having trouble with thier stock. The idea was not to shoot a female, and leave a den full of pups to starve. We weren't out to eradicate coyotes, just keep them under some kind of control. To us, this was the humane way.

End of an era

I just said goodbye to my favorite hunting ground. That hunting ground would happen to be my parents property, the place where I grew up, and the place I've shot hundreds (likely thousands) of bputs over the last 26 years. My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (very bad cancer to have) so we had to sell and move my parents in with me so he can get treatment and be taken care of. I'm sure I can stop by and ask the new owners if I can shoot but it just isn't the same. I was hoping my parents would be there long enough I could teach my boys to shoot at the same place where I learned. Oh well, in the grand scheme of things its not about me anyway, the important thing is helping my dad, the man who taught me practically everything I know about shooting. So, if any of you are the praying type my dads a varmint hunter from way back that could really use your prayers. Thanks.

My brother and I are about to leave on our annual trip together. Our father introduced us to the outdoor sports many a year ago. Oddly, my brother took to fishing late and I decided to hunt. Dad passed on years ago so My brother and I annually get together without our spouses to hunt and fish and lie and drink beer and reminisce and just be brothers, even though we're both over 55. So we'll say a prayer for your Dad while remembering ours. We're off to Wyoming late April. Good Hunting!

sorry bout your dad, its tough. lost mine to colon ca in 1996. its not bout the land that you learned on, its the stuff your pap taught you, and that you will teach your kids that will always be in the family. we had a family farm that was sold also. it was tough, but got easier. im just glad theres guys like you who teach there kids things like self sacrafice, standing by family. things that make us real men, just like your dad must have taught you. will pray for pap. keep your chin up

Well its been a long haul. My dad had just bought a .204 Ruger and was getting a load worked up and couln't wait to go try it out. He was doing quite well but suddenly had a bunch of things go wrong. Yesterday I buried a great man. He was a great hunter (Varmint or otherwise). I just wanted to thank all of you who were praying for him. His struggles are over and I look forward to seeing him again. The next time you put the crosshairs on a varmint please think of my dad and other varmint hunters who have gone before us. I've just inherited all his guns and loading equipment and can think of no better way of honoring him than putting them to good use. Thanks everyone.

It's one thing to have a personal opinion about something based on fact..It's another to create a site, propigate it with basically.. B.S to try and pass off as fact..Oh well..At least i had a good laugh.

As i read through some of your earlier posts, i noticed your store was closed by some of the P.C. and grass lovers. If you could find a way to sell your items elsewhere, or on your site, i would be more than happy to pay full price. Plus $10 on each item i ordered, just to make it worth your time, and to get under the skin of the ones who shut you down.

This appears to be a very insightful, and entertaining forum, i would be more than happy to do my part to keep it goin.(plus it sounds like you had some pretty good shirts)

More 597 woes

Last year I wrote asking about any Rem. 597 17HMR problems and the response was that they were junk. Well now its a year later and after the shop owner told me that the problem was taken care of I thought I'd try it again. This time I didn't have to waste 10-12 rounds sighting in cuz it blew up on the FIRST SHOT! How do they get out of the factory? They sure are proud of these things as the price went up $100.00 since last year.

What happened? "Blew up" is a bit broad...
Were you hurt?
Did the barrel fail?
Did the action break?
Did it "just" fire out of battery?

I think the breech just isn't locking up. The brass ends up with a hole in the side of the case down at the rim. As far as 'blowing up' go's the bottom of the clip blows out and the extracter is gone as is the charging handle. The first time a year ago I had on sun glasses so this time thought I'd wear safety glasses (sometimes I amaze my self LOL). Pain is minimal behind the gun (a little powder burn) but if someone was at the bench to the right of me I might have found the charge handle and extracter lodged in the side of there head.

We did have an invitee to our informal group this year that had a Rem HMR as well as a Mach2. Neither impressed. Rather than bad-mouth the manufacturer, collectively we allowed the possibility that it was either the shooter, or the glass, or the horrible factory trigger and/or a combination of all factors. It is doubted that hits beyond fifty yards were recorded by that particular shooter with any of his rifles.
Best performers were the Savages which had glass specified for the rimfire with AOs up to 10x which were deemed to get resonably good performance out of the little screamer round. It is doubted that a more complete evaluation would result in any different conclusion that the HMR caliber MAY,in the hands of a competent shooter, be fairly accurate out to about 150 yds (on a fairly calm day). Expectations beyond that distance fall into the category of hope and prayer. Terminal performance was severely reduced beyond the 100 y/m range. Wind was a factor but not as much as had been initially anticipated, but again, as with any projectile, the further the distance, wind created more erratic shot placement.
ADDENDUM: A two inch bull was hit at lasered range of 208 yds but it did take me two shots in a mildly gusting wind. To put it in perspective, my third shot did not even cut paper!

Re: the Remington 597 in .17HMR -- they make reasonable door stops and boat anchors. I heard they can be made into lamps and ashtrays. I know a super mellow man that owns about 2 sq. mi. of circular irrigated alfafa farm and squirrel habitat. He bought a Rem. 597 for wholesale squirrel control in .17HMR caliber. The rifle didn't last a whole box of shells (50) before it "blew-up". He sent it back to the factory and the factory sent him a new rifle which also "blew up". He sent the second one back to Remington again and Remington sent him the rifle back ?repaired?? Before he even test fired it he traded it in on a bolt action Savage M93 heavy barrel in .17HMR. The Savage has done its fair share of squirrel reduction duties. The Remington 597 is a mess, stay away from it. If you walk around the corrals long enough you will get some ... on your boots, if you know what I mean? I like the good old .22 magnum for longer distance rimfire varmint shooting.

700's Rock! (Well they used to!)

I just took the factory barrel off a .300 WM yesterday in a 700 that had .0015 TIR across that short stretch, (the lug.) That's an easy fix and the guy's rifle doesn't use all the windage on his scope to correct.

I don't think I'd have one of those 597's up the !!!.

One of our Marines showed back up to work a couple weeks ago, and Vilas still says that damn 700 action is still the frontrunner in the M40-A1!

I hope Rem figures something out! They better fire the designer and basically get back up to speed! (597)

That is scary! I own a 597 in 22LR and it shoot and works fine. About 500 rounds through it so far. It is a cheap rifle. I think the .17 is just too hot..Makes me wonder what ammo the factory used to cert. the action. Have you tried going on the rem web site? I've used the "ask a question" service and it's pretty neat. They answered my questions. You sign up then you email your question. It takes about 3 days to get an answer back. I would really like to read the excuse they will use to explain your problem.

I've had a 597 in .22 mag. for about 4-5 years now and I've killed garden bunnies, coons and even a woodchuck with that thing. I had so much fun with it a buddy got one in .17HMR and in the 3 years he's had it he has put 200-300 rounds through it with no problems. I love the round but I guess I'll have to stick with my CZ bolt. It shoot really good but I do like the idea of having a auto-loader for those multi-target moments.

.223 is becoming scarce.

I was in the local gun shop this morning, and we were discussing the recent jump in the price of .223 ammo. It seems all US ammunition manufacturers now have a contract with Israel to manufacture .223 for them. Every possible round that can be produced is sent over there, and the contract has no definite end.

He was also saying primers have now became hard to find since small rifle primers are all that is being made and they are all going into the .223 rounds that are headed out of the country. Primers have jumped $10/1000 in the past couple of weeks as well.

Yea... this is a general trend lately. It has been discussed in nauseating depth on other gun-related forums.
If you recall, the same thing happened in the early 90's.

I saw recently that Weidener's has a good price on the Mil-spec CCI Large Rifle primers ($70/5,000). That is a good opportunity to stock up at $14 per 1,000!

Sorry, this is pretty much the only firearm forum I look at regularly. Long-Range is another, but .223 is not discussed there. Most of the time I am browsing automotive boards (I race a Mustang).

It's similar here in Canada, except it's 7.62x39. Can't find any north american stuff anywhere. I just got my order for 1000rds of 6.8 spc brass (remington)..That took 3 months to get.

I forgot to write..North american manufactured 7.62X39. There is the eastern euro stuff here but it's kind of crappy. Norinco ammo was good..but it's not being imported to canada for some reason.

My nephew is the youngest person to ever draw a Bighorn sheep tag, 12 yrs old. He drew the tag on his first try, the first year he was able to hunt big game in Oregon, in the hardest unit to draw. Rocky Mtn. Bighorn sheep, Snake River unit.
I just got the word that he shot his ram, it scored 176 1/8th. not quite B&C but high in the Oregon book.
They will go back to the site to finish filming tomorrow.

.17HMR workout

Just back from annual CGFI shoot in Alberta where due to the bagpipes playing of Amazing Grace several times over, there was a lack of a quorum. Did not get started 'til the Yardapes were back in school and the little critters were prepping for the long snooze. No big guns this yr and only used the little rimfire with 17 gr Win Vmax circa 2550 fps. Chrono malfunc'd up! Conditions generally windy and wet but some remarkable results obtained with various configurations of stocks including synthetics and thumb holed laminates. Essentially, only triggers were adjusted. Following results verfied: Tumbled a coyote around 225 yds, but he reversed direction and slowly ran away. Two more shots "on the wing" did not cut hair. Badger hit center of mass still made it down his hole from 108yds. Gophers were struck consistently out to around 150 yds with following hits recorded beyond: 208 & 162 (both required 3 shots)plus one shot one kill at 156yds.

Repeated woundings were noted once distances exceeded 100 yards. Scopes used were either 3x9 or 3.5x10 and had AOs.

Consensus of opinion: They were a lot of fun but absolutely no aerial acrobatics were accomplished. After it was all over and done, we felt like we'd been caught in the back alley behind the Moulina Rojo (sp ?) without our underwear not where it was supposed to be.

thanks guys. if you heard about a chinook #171 go down w/ 5 servicemembers aboard keep their families in your prayers. They were in my unit and very good friends. The widows and families are doing okay my wife says. Mortuary affairs had a hard job to do and i commend them. They were recovering my friends remains while the helicopter was still on fire. Investigation not over yet. Setting up satellite internet and local network for sharing it. If you didn't know, aligning satellites sucks. Adios. Hope the sky stays big and the bullets stay little.
