Any of you folks have any experience with a 6MM Ack Improved? I just rigged one up and am looking for some ideas on loads,I tried a few but it will only group.160
(5 shots @ 100yds)I used a junk SS bench Barrel that was discarded by a serious shooter, dont have the make or twist on it cause it went thru several owners before i got it. Put it on a Rem 700 action and a K&S syn stock after I recontured the barrel to a lot less mass so i could carry it without a two wheel dolly !The old thing shoots 70 gr Hornady HPs in the .160 group while chronographing 4400 fps with no pressure signs, but like all shooters I aint happy till I find a tighter hole.

Dang HB, you're famous! :-) Anyway, is this your primary varmint rifle? What are your typical groups with it? Any issues you'd call out? I need a couple new rifles and I'm thinking hard about what I'm going to get. The 6mm has some definite alure... Thanks.

The 6mm Ackley is my primary long range varminting rifle. I have a .223 that is often a better choice for shots out to 300 yards.

Groups size? Since it is a full-on, custom-built bench gun, it'll easily shoot 1/4 MOA. Yes, I have shot 1/4" groups with with this rifle using lighter match bullets. Groups open up to the 1/2" - 3/4" range when using heavier VLD bullets.

If I were building the same rifle today, I would seriously consider the 243 WSSM. Talk to your chosen gunsmith. When I had this rifle built, Jim Borden had a preference for the 6mm Ackley. That may have changed since the WSSMs have been introduced.

6mm bullets are widely available for both varminting and for hunting, so it does have great versatility.

Well, I just took possesion of a new savage in .308 and I can't wait to get out and drop a 'yote with it! A Savage 10 FP! 20" heavy barrel. Now if I could just find a perfect load for it.....

Congrats, you will not regret it. Did you get the 1:10 or the 1:12 twist? Mine in 1:10 loves the 165 gr hornady SST's with 44.5 grains of Ramshot TAC behind it. Again this is just for me but I can put 4 of 5 bullets on top of each other at 200 yards. Be very sure to break in your barrel, yes I know it's boring and time consuming but well worth it.

It's a 1 in 10 twist and I'm breaking in the barrel slowley, Infortunately, My work keeps me away from what I would rather do, and the powers that be won't let me take that rifle up to the oil sands with me. So I have to wait untill the oppourtunity presents itself!!

I don't get the "barrel break-in" obsession people have. I guess it must work for some. I personally just shot my savage 12 in 308 out of the box and it groups 1/2 to 5/8 inch. Over 500 rounds through the barrel now. Cleaning once per range session or day on the PD fields. Longest shot...over 700 yds at PD.

Does anyone know of a cheek rest that would fit the savage synthetic stock? I find that the scope sits too high for the height of the stock, I'm thinking of fabricateing one out of wood and screwing it onto the comb.

They make a leather /foam cheek pad for garand sniper rifles that laces on to a rifle stock.www.cheaperthan dirt.com used to sell them and I am pretty sure still does.I think one of those would be a lot easier than making your own. Good luck

Supposedly with the Savage button rifles barrels, break in is not required as much as cut rifled...*shrug*

Since I've bought My Savage, I've launched 26 rounds through that pipe and have cleaned it twice. After shooting about 15 rounds through it, I cleaned it with a copper solvent but to my surprize, there was hardly any blue showing on that patch! I let the solvent sit in the barrel for about three minutes before I ran another patch down that pipe. Savage has created a barrel that, from what I can see, really doesn't need a break in period. Has anyone experianced a lack of blue on their patches or am I doing something wrong?

Savage button-rifles their barrels, which leaves a smoother bore than most other methods.

The only downside is that this method creates internal stresses in the barrel that can cause the POI to shift with temperature. Cryo-treating the barrel will solve this possible issue.

By now, I have put just over 100 rounds through that new Savage .308 rifle. I found that RE-15 at 46 gns pushing a Hornady SST 150 gn pellet works just great!
I'm useing Federal cases and CCI primers It's not quite putting one ragged hole at 100, but it's getting close. Maybe it's me and not the shootin' stick.
After all, I'm not getting any younger. I might just re-stock it and put a dragonov type stock on that thing.
Does anyone out there have any thing to say about that"sniper stock" put out by Choat that was designed by Major John Plaster?

I bought the after-market stock by Plaster for my M12FVSS in .223. My pal has the Sav Choate on his and another pal has the Sav Choate that he even modified further by lead weight. All three rifles are capable of incredible accuracy. One pal did under a quarter inch group @ 200 meters with his and last Aug I won some cash shooting @ 600 yards with my Plaster stocked rifle. They're hvy yet ideal for sitting at a bench or in back of pu truck. So far tho' we've only managed BPUT confirmed kills out to circa 300M, but that is due to topography. For over 50 years if it didn't have Rem or Win on it (topped with a Leupold) I wouldn't use it; now I humbly admit the error of my ways and welcome Sav into the confines of my safe.

I have a Choate varminter stock on a Rem-700 and it works great off a bench. Recoil is straight back, which makes seeing your bullet impact a lot easier.

The Choate stocks have an Aluminum bedding block, so you don't have to bed the action into the stock - just torque your action screws and its in.

Double gun hard case

First off I'm new here posting, but I've been reading off and on for a few days now. Somewhere I saw a posting about double rifle cases and now I can't seem to find it. There was a specific case I wanted to look into. It was built for two firearms, but instead of laying flat they sat upright in the case so the scope wasn't touching anything. It was kind of like the Plano AirGlide. If anyone knows the brand, or ven where to buy them please let me know. Thanks a lot!!

One add on to my posts about those cases. Make SURE you use a gunsock if you have wood stocked firearms. It rubbed the checkering off my CZ 375 H&H. Very happy with it though.

My wife, bless her heart, got me the Safari case and it has worked out great. Its very easy to access my guns from the back of the pickup and not take up a lot of bed space. I had to cut some of the foam to fit the 'varnimt' stocks. Good luck and welcome to the club!

my buddys 223 wont shoot like it did.i spent over an hour with jb bore cleaner barnes cr 10 and butches bs. scrubbed&scrubbed .shot 40some rounds@100yrds. the group was almost 3 in. last year when he bought it it would shoot under an inch. then he shot some in my gun and the group size was half. any thoughts would be great. thanks gezzer

After a six month snooze the ground squirrels (gophers) have awakened and come out to play in north central Montana. Six were sighted yesterday and six were put to bed for the big dirt sleep. Let this serve as a warning for any deep cover moles, the gloves are coming off and we will give no quarter. That is all.......

I was on the phone with my wifes dad yesterday. He got the first chuck of the year. Hit it with a 2billion grain Dodge plastic tipped bullet pushed by 35 gal of chevron 89, ripping along at 65 mph. Only had the thing a week & damn near put 'er in the ditch in the process. LOL

This reminds me of when I was in college. I came home for the summer and my mom asked that I take her to get some groceries. We had about 400yds of pea gravel road between the county road and the house and hay fields on both sides. Well, as luck would have it a gopher ran across the road up ahead of me on the way back and unlike most sane people who would have continued up to the house and got a rifle I went 4 wheelin with my Chevy Citation in an attempt to run it over. Its been almost 20 years and my mom still brings it up....

This reminds me of when I was a kid. My oldest brother was about 17 or so at the time and my dad told him to swath a particular hayfield. Nothing special so there shouldn't be any problems, right? Well, about 30 minutes into cutting he comes walking down the hill in a rather agitated state. We check things out to find out that on his very first round he hit a family of skunks with the swather and they cut loose while being stewed by the sickle. This swather has no cab. He barely got it shut down before bailing off and making a run for it. We couldn't get him all that interested in cutting hay after that....:-)
