I finally get to go out PD hunting with my new 700BDL. I had a question... What do you guys do with the PD's and coyotes after you shoot them? Do you just leave them there or pick them up to throw away?

Tratan- Thanks, I really can say this web site has everything now. First advice on what caliber to use, where to hunt, what is the best load, then how to hunt them, of course how to celebrate when you score, and now the final low spot -- HOW TO PREPARE PD's AND EAT VARMINTS. I am sending this recipe to Emril Lagossi watch in the somewhat distant future for "Varmint Hunter's Delight". I do agree with your choice of wines, however, a pint of tequilla would probably help me get the stew down or stewed whichever comes first.

I have been wondering the same thing. I am planning my first trip PD hunting, and am not sure what the proper thing to do after the kill is. I can't imagine going out and picking up a few hundred prarie dog parts.

Not quite sure how to start with this one....First of all the proper thing to do after the kill is to regain your composure from the gut rolling laughter after witnessing the varmint that is the "flying(or splattering) Prairie Dog". Wipe your eyes and go admire the destructive nature of a high performance bullet and your shooting skills. I mean really, the bullet can't do it's job if you don't put it in the right place, right? If, at that time, you can find a piece big enough, I would highly recommend just walking away to find another target.
If that recipe shows up, pass it around havoc!!!

If you eat them raw, they taste like chickens that you shoot out on the prairie.

However, if you cook them, they taste like Snowy Owls.

PD are left there. You can often see hawks come in for lunch. Coyotes will also make short work of the pieces left, though you will seldom see them.

Coyote hides can be sold for money, and some people make some nice spending change this way. The value of the skin depends upon where you are and what season it is. Cold-weather coyote pelts bring the best money. Warm-weather pelts are not worth much.

The real fun part is trying to figure out where they've all gone the next day. No matter how many you pop, the next day they're all gone. Every last one of them. They're cannibals, which is most likely the answer, but it's still kinda creepy.

Ok I have to weigh in on this one. After the shot and laughter, take a picture and or stop the video camera from recording. Then move on to the next target. Some times you will see some of them actually try to pull the dead into a hole or just eat them in plain sight. Under all circumstances this action must be met with ballistic tips at high velocity. So, please do not pick them up, we had 2 confirmed cases of the plague from this sort of action in Wyoming this summer. The personal glory is not worth the hospital bill!

I don't mess with any of them either. I've had an entertaining time feeding the Hawks. I would shoot a ground squirrel and the local hawk would swoop in and take it almost immediately. If you must mess with the pieces you can use a shovel or something so you don't have to handle them directly. That way those pesky plague ridden fleas don't take up residence...

Yote Road Trip

I traveled last week (Oct.) from Biloxi to S. Colorado to visit family, i took my yote equipment along to pass the time. Criter-Call produced a close up yote with in 2 minutes! on my first stand in Northern New Mexico.
And interesting note was there was very little road kill in New Mexico, but Colorado (Durango to Pagossa Springs) was littered with deer and a few elk. New Mexico yotes were every where, shot 11 in 3 days of hunting all of them were called up within 150 yards of the black top. Yotes in Colorado ignored every attempt to lure them in gun range...

I hunted State lands and National Forest, 4 day small game lic. are cheap and can be bought on-line. I will return in November and hopefully can hunt yotes in the snow... Anyone interested in joining me?

silver bullets

I shoot lots of gophers (richardson's ground squirrels, columbia grounds squirrels and prairie dogs.) One of the problems I have is that when "action" is brisk the barrel on my gun (hvy bbrl .223) heats up more than I would like. I have to switch to another gun during the cool off period which can be a big hassle or wait for coolage which when surrounded by legions of moving targets makes me crazy!
I have discovered the answer to this and wanted to share it for anyone who might be interested.
calhoon bullets! 37 grain double hollow points loaded with 14 grains of blue dot.
3200 fps and less than no recoil. And no barrel heat! Still enough juice for buckets of red mist.
I've shot lots of diffrent kinds of bullets at gophers but these are right at the top of the list.
Do a web search and look up these calhoon bullets.then try a few. You'll like 'em!

Gopher Greaser, the Calhoon bullets seem good. We bought some early on and they corroded really badly but apparently they now coat the bullets so I don't think its an issue anymore. All the same, I would keep them in a dry place. I hear good things about them otherwise and plan to buy a bunch more. But what I'm wondering is whether or not its the bullet or if you have just found a good reduced load. At 3200 fps a polymere tipped bullet should do just as well. Since you say you've shot lots of different kinds of bullets I imagine you have used Nosler bt. Wouldn't a 40gr Nosler bt do about the same? The Calhoons are good but it just seems they would be about the same as others. But who knows. I like the sounds of the amount of "action" you get. Where are you located? Willing to give up some good hunting locations:-)

woodsman- I am located in north central Montana. To be honest I drove right to Calhoons bullet factory (Havre) and met him and took a tour of the bullet factory. The owner graciously let me fire a new wildcat caliber (19 badger)right out the back door of the bullet factory.It's a 30 cal carbine shell necked down to a 19 caliber. The cartridge is teeny but shoots 3850fps.Its built on a CZ action with a set trigger. No matter how many rounds you put through it,it never heats up.But I digress.
I bought 1,000 bullets and took them home and loaded up a bunch. On the first day in addition to some perforated paper targets, three muskrats, a fox and a feral cat bought the farm.
They shoot like magical bullets!We have minimal humidity here and his bullets are electroplated so if they corrode that must mean I need to shoot them quicker and more often. I shall strive to do just that.

critrgetr- The load is listed right on the box of bullets when you purchase them. I don't know if it is listed on the 100 count or 250 count bags/boxes but it is on the 1000 count boxes. It says "fun gopher load"-14 grains of blue dot=3200 fps-all I can say is I personally think its a great load. Its like shooting a 22 long rifle noise and recoil wise but with massive destruction and great accuracy.

I thought you might live somewhere in MT. I grew up near Great Falls myself. I didn't have many pdogs to shoot that were legal in my area but I sure had gophers. The calhoon bullets we bought were not coated the way the newer ones are and that is what corroded. We loaded a bunch and stored them in an ammo box with a bunch of rounds loaded with Hornady SX. The SX were fine. The Calhoons corroded and even had a very odd corrosion that went partly or completely down the brass itself. Very strange. Anyway, I plan to drop by Calhoons place sometime myself. I'm interested in a round like the .19 badger but am concerned about the issues with brass/bullets/etc in the future. I also want him to explain the double hollow point technology he uses. It would be cool to meet sometime and do shome shooting.

Finally decided/Fancy Shooting

Well, after too many months of saving money and planning, I have decided NOT to get the Savage .22-250, but I also have an incredible story of fancy shooting. Well, anyway, I think that I'm just gonna put a better trigger on my Weatherby .270 (I had a Timney in mind)and possibly get a better, mid priced 4.5-14X44 scope. Is there anything else that I can do to accurize my gun? I recently tested it for deer season and my first three shots fell in a group of under two inches with cheap ammo, and i know i could close the group up to under an inch if I had a real good rest and a good trigger. Any suggestions would be appreciated...

We went down to Texas a couple weeks ago to do some pig hunting with my uncle and grandfather. To make a long story short, we hunted for 5 hours and walked mile upon mile and saw nothing. That night my uncle stayed at his place. In the morning, he was sitting by his camper drinking some coffee and cleaning his gun when he saw four pigs running down a creek bottom. He picked up his .22-250 (handloaded 54grain hollow points.) and picked every last one of them off, ranging from 300-150 yards. (They were running too) I couldn't believe it. That was some of the fanciest shooting I have ever heard of...

Hola Gringo, you are on the right track with the Timney trigger. I have used them with good success on several rifles for myself and clients. They are not the most costly but usually beat the heck out of a factory trigger. Next thing is to glass bed the recoil lug then free float the barrel. These three things plus a reasonable scope should have your .270 shooting in the 1 m.o.a. neighborhood. Good handloads can reduce your group size by 25-35%. Give it some thought. I have yet to come across a .270 that wouldn't shoot 1 m.o.a. groups in my 35 years working with rifles. Of course, how much accuracy so you need to shoot big game? Best of luck amigo.

I've been switching to Shilen triggers from MidwayUSA.com. Alittle less cash and work real good but don't know if they have your model Sav. And in bright summer sun of P.D. shooting the Bushnell's are great,you don't see the heat waves like you do in a lesser scope.

I've heard about Glass Bedding, but looks complicated, but I guess gunssmiths are adequate for that. The barrel is already free-floated, so that is a plus. I don't plan to shoot just big game. Coyotes and pigs are on the list as well, I have a Japanese Tasco on it rihgt now, only 3-9X40 though. Want something in the 4.5-14 range as I have mentioned above. Whatever works though.

If u belong to a gun or shooting club, talk to some of the members. Alas, some smittys, although competent with metal, fail at bedding and merit having their vocation spelled with an "h" instead of an "m". Ur on right track with the 4.5x14. That is only scope (one with a 50mm bell) I use on my big calibres and of course at the risk of starting a vehement debate prefer something that starts with an "L". At dawn or dusk, they provide in my view excellent sight picture. For most applications, I rarely turn it past 6x for wider field of view, but on occasion for the longer pots, the 14x has not failed me yet.

I would recommend the Nikon Buckmaster Model 6466. 4.5X14X40 with side focus. I have one on my .204 Ruger 77VT and love it. I believe I paid $340 or so for mine. They are very clear with around 94% light transmission.

I don't know. Thats pretty expensive. How are the Bushnell Banners? I don't want anything real expensive, as I already mentioned I am only 14 and don't have a job. They seem good enough. Just something clear and that picks up light well.

Sorry, I didn't catch where you said you were 14/no job. I just saw you mentioned a mid-priced scope, so i was thinking that Nikon would be mid range between a $100 scope and $800.

As far as the Banner, I have one and don't really like it at all. I had to have it replaced under warranty because it wouldn't hold center. The clarity is not good at all. My Banner is now on one of my 17 Mach2's, and I would rather have a better scope even on it. I would put another $80 bucks or so with it and get a Bushnell Legend. I have one in 5-15X40 and its pretty clear and a LOT better than the Banner. For a decent scope under $100, I would look at the Tasco Varmint/Target. I have three of them, 2 are 6-18X40, one is 8-32X44 (its about $160). The clarity on the 6-18 gets bad on high powers, but all in all, they are good scopes.

Gringo- I have a Tasco 3-12X 40mm with target knobs and A.O. that would be great for you. I sell them in my store for $55.00 new in the box. I bet you can find one around your area for near the same price. It is model #90558. I personally shoot one on a .22 magnum and it works great.

.22 Magnum recoil and .270 recoil are way different. Do you think it would hold center? 55.00 seems like a pretty cheap scope, but is it cheaply made and does the quality a mirror of the price? Heck, if one of those worked for me, I would have some money left over.

Buying a scope

I need a scope to put on a rifle I got a few months ago. I was looking a leupold or burris. I would like a 24-32 (max) power by 50mm. I am leaning toward the burris because they are a couple hundred dollars less. What do you all use and how do you like it? I would go bother the gun shop guy about it but being in Iraq makes that a bit difficult. Oh yeah the rifle is a 22-250.

I have Nightforce, Leupold and Burris scopes. All are good, so long as you stay with their high-end products.

I do like the Burris Black Diamond line. The Ballistic Mil-dot reticule helps when shooting multiple targets at unknown distances, like when shooting PDs: I don't adjust the scope up or down except when the range changes drastically for most targets.

I have Burris and Leupold optics. I like my Burris Fullfield II's better than my Leupold VXIII 8.5-25x50mm, which is for sale by the way w/ Leupold rings and Base for Savage short action. I have gone to all Burris optics b/c they're great for the money. The side focus on my Leupold is nice, but no essential to me. Also, I find magnification over 14x is too much. I usually turn my leupold down to 14 unless shooting over 500 yards. Just my opinion, I just bought all Burris optics for my 3 Blaser barrels and they shoot great.

Hola JMK, I can shoot more or less any scope I want in the business I am in. I, personally, have a Burris 6.5-20X 50mm Fullfield II on my heavy barrel .22-250. This combination with handloaded 55 gr. Nosler ballistic tips riding over 35 grains of H4895 has been the "last thought" of several hundred if not over 1,000 varmints over the last 3 years. I think you should be careful to use very high quality scope mounts and rings also. I prefer the Leupold double dovetail sets. Best of luck. P.S. You can get the Burris as above for around $400 on the internet, the mounts/rings should be around $35.

jkutlesa, Do yourself a favor and hold off on that scope purchase until you get a chance to check out the Bushnell 4200 Elite series of scopes. I own a couple Leupolds and recently bought an 8-32X Burris Signature Select and they are all fine choices, but the 4200 Elite I aquired on a used 700VLS was a great surprize. This scope is way brighter than the Burris and has every bit of the resolution of my Leupolds. It's the 6-24X with a mil-dot reticle and target turrets. I have settings for every 100yds. out to 400 yds. and manipulate the adjustments frequenly while sniping groundhogs, and it always comes back to zero without failure. You can get this scope for around $400 fom Natches Shooter's Supply. I spent close to $500 for the Burris, and I like the Bushnell better overall. Good Luck on your choice!

My friend bought a Bushnell Elite 3200 for his Ruger 300 Win Mag after finding out that the Leupold VX2 3-9x50 was too short. Bummer b/c he got a great deal ($200) on that Leupold. I shot the 3200 and found it to be a good scope, but I would not personally have purchased it. I'm sure the 4200 is a much better scope. But, as I said before, I love Burris and have 4 of their scopes to include the 6.5-20, 4.5-14, and two 3-9's all with Ballistic Plex. You can get the 4.5-14 version with a free spotter scope from Sportsman's Warehouse for about $400, or without for about $300. On the Burris scopes I find that I don't have to change my head position at all throughout the entire magnification range like I do on my Leupold.

The elite 4200 is a far better scope than the 3200, but the price reflects it too.

the next level of the RE

The next version, still in progress, will allow for:
- Internationalization (i18l)
- better theming options
- plugins (still in the works)

This has been in the works for a long, long time. At one point, I had partially rolled this out, only to retract it, and toss a lot of the work out on it's ear.

There is still a lot of clean up and checking to be done, but I won't know if I broken anything in the process until some people test it and let me know.

Yes, it looks different. HTML tables are gone, Long live CSS! (That means that your browser has ~27% less stuff to download, and doesn't have to carry the burden of rendering tables, which is difficult for some reason.)

Stoked for deer season

As some of you know my oldest boy Cody is mildly retarded & has been struggling with his shooting skills. His eyes are cross dominant and he has a hard time seeing through a scope or lining up open sights. I put a holo-site (Springfield Armory) on a mod. 99 Savage and got him started shooting with it. I wish I would have thought about this years ago, after 8 rounds fired he was as acurate as his brother out to 150 yards (the holo-site has no magnification). After lots of practice he is gettig rather proficient, and really enjoys shooting now, and is finally excited about going deer and elk hunting this year. At 15 years old he will finnaly get his first buck and elk (if I do my part).

I took them both out again Sunday, for some more practice with thier hunting rifles. They are both so excited. I don't think either of them will sleep this week, with opening day coming up on saturday. I am so glad that Cody can see himself as one of us hunters rather than just a tag along.
I'll never forget the look in his eyes when we were done shooting for the day.

I think that it is great that you found a way to get him out and enjoying the outdoors. I kind of know what its like, I was in an atv accident last year and temporarily lost the use of my left arm. Until all of my surgeries are done I will be relying on my bipods to help kill some hogs.

What an awsome thing you are going through!!! I went through a similar situation, my stepson was a "tag along" for two years. He never really got involved with the regular bantor of the camp until that opening morning the first year he could legally hunt. He didn't feel comfortable sitting by himself so I accompanied him to the stand which is a large box stand. He was sitting on my lap and as luck would have it, a small buck walked right out in front of us. One shot and it was time to celebrate! I honestly can't say it was as emotional as your situation, all things considered, but if you are half as pumped as I was, don't plan on getting much sleep for a while!!

Well, deer season was about the 2nd worst we've ever had, no big bucks were even seen. Lots of dinky forked horns & spikes once the weather changed, but were nearly all 300 yds or farther out. We did find a few that were closer for the kids to take a crack at. My father-in-law's newly adopted daughter ( by 2 days on opening day ) got her first deer on opening day, a spike x fork.
Cody, my oldest got buck fever REALLY bad, & never got off a shot on a nice little forky, but he had a great time anyway and is looking foreward to Elk season. He has a "hair" tag, but swears that he's gonna hold out for a bull.
Brett, my 2nd oldest son missed a nice 3x3 on the second to the last day. He said he knew he missed the second he "yanked" on the trigger, and has been beating himself up ever since.
All in all it was not a bad season (we won't be eating any "tag steaks"), but would have been better if my 2 boys could have connected.

My fater-in-law killed a black bear on friday, about a 300 lb boar. What a rodeo that was. We chased him down a crooked logging road for about 1/4 mile before it climbed up a point & he got a shot at him. I couln't get off a shot, because I was driving, and my pickup had not slid to a stop yet when Guy got out & shot.

I thought they were expensive too, but some are pretty reasonable. They're running from $1700 on the low end synthetic/professional models to well above $20K on the high end safari models.

Quick change barrels, straight pull bolt, totally modular, and manually cocked strangely enough. I've got my gun list out to cull and i can afford a prestige model ~$2700 if I sell 9 guns. It would be worth it just so i wouldn't have to register so many guns on the military posts i work on. Unfortunately, Mickey Rat has frowned on the purchase as being too ugly. I'm trying to find one here in town to handle and get really familiar with before i make a final decision.

What is really sad is that while visiting Stick (I was headed to the North Pole) in Fairbanks, AK we went to a gun show. One of the guns was a Blaser for around $900.00. I had the bucks, but it was way to ugly for me. Would have been a good investment.

I see 2 things wrong with the Blaser:

1. It isn't available in stainless.
2. Too expensive. For the price of one gun (2700.00) I can have 3 nice guns with pretty decent glass on them.

It is, however, a fasinating concept. There was a recent article in Rifle Shooter about swap barrel rifles. It can be done even with a simple Mauser by not turning in the barrel so tight. On guy even had three 223 barrels for his PD gun so he could swap them out when they got hot.

Well, the Blaser came in this weekend and it is BEAUTIFUL and shoots wonderfully. The 243 is much kinder to my shoulder than the 375 H&H though. I'm very pleased w/ the walnut and scroll engraving. The trigger is EXCELLENT. I haven't tried it for groups yet b/c it's cold and i'm underdressed. I did get all barrels zeroed on paper at 25 yards though. Switching calibers was nerve racking the first time, but i got the hang of it pretty quickly. changing bolt heads was taxing as well, but all came out fine. I expect a person familiar with the system should be able to change from a standard caliber group to a magnum or mini caliber group in about a minute. I'm looking forward to the grouping stage followed by the Proving stage. I still need to zero the iron sights.

Then i need to shoot groups w/ scope, remove scope and reinstall, shoot group, remove barrel and reinstall, shoot group, remove barrel and scope and reinstall, shoot group to make sure it holds zero in all situations. I'm hoping it does well.

Yote: I'm off to the home of the Eskimos & Stampeders for practical application of 69 gr HPBTs. I hope there are a few BPUTs left after the rptd tennis ball size hail storm! Depending on how long it takes to dispose of a couple of thou rds, I may not be back for a couple of wks. Shud get in some first hand experience with the new .204 Ruger and find out (since I am stubborn) whether or not there really is something to take note of about the fairly new rd.

Keep us posted on that .204's results. I am also still wondering if I "need" a .204 in my arsenal. Any info gained from live targets is invaluable. Holes in paper don't impress me...holes in actual critters does!

I too am from Pa. I love my 204 more than any other varmint rig I have. Mine is an xr-100 Remington rangemaster with a sightron sittin on it. It is very efficient on hogs, my longest documented shot with it being 547.5yds. no crap. go for it you wont regret it.
