CZ Rimfires

If you guys have not shot the CZ line of Rimfire rifles you need to give them a try. They are made a lot like the old Winchester and Remington classic bolt actions with nice wood, high polish blue metal and classic lines. I recently got to shoot a few and ordered a CZ 452 American in .22LR. Now like potato chips,I want another one but in .22 Mag or .17HMR Here is an article on my blog you might like to read. Ed

wilded you are going to love the CZ line of rifles. I have a CZ 452 Varmint in 22 LR and both 22mag & 17HMR in 452 American. This are some of the finest rimfires I have ever shot. I am even looking at picking up one in 17 mach 2.
I have killed a lot of prairie dogs and Jack rabbits with the 22mag and even killed one coyote. The 22 Varmint is used mainly for cottontails and squirrels. I just got the 17 as a birthday gift from my wife so I haven't really got to try it out yet.

CZ makes a nice rifle. A friend introduced me to them a couple years ago. I ended up buying a 452 american in .17hmr. Beautiful wood and blueing.

The only issues I have with them is the stock touches the barrel on one side at the end of the forearm. Easily fixed with a little sanding and sealer. Next, the mags are pricey.

Overall I am very happy with mine. It shoots great and looks great.

i know this is not a varmint rifle...but with all this knowledge, im sure someone can help.i have a marlin 1894c 357 mag carbine,problem is first shot is on taget,second shot is 2in high 2in right...3rd shot is 2in low 2in left.terrible string.i ended up shooting one shot,go mark the target,change ammo,shoot one shot go mark the target,it took forever.i dont know much about lever guns,i checked the scope mounts, all tight. any thoughts might help.thanks .

how far away is your target? are you using factory ammo? what type of scope is it? alot of lever guns are not very accurate..have you tried Hornady's leverlution ammo?

Changing powder has led to some TERRIBLE groups for me, even when the velocity is close between different loads.

Changing powder without cleaning the bore has exhibited very strange behavior, so I don't do it anymore.
If I change ammo, then I clean before I shoot again.

If this is not your situation, and the target is at 100 yards, then a ~4 MOA group may be the best you can expect from the gun. A 4 MOA lever gun is not uncommon.

i handload all my ammo. range was 75yds. i tested hornady 158gr. hp&fp,speer158gr.gold dot and a remington cheap bullet,guess which one shot the best? the remington the hornady load was the same powder charge using h110 the speer was 2400,just seems odd all groups first shot center hit then 2o'clock then 8o'clock. maybe its just the nature of the beast...dad always said make the first shot count! thanks guys p.s. maybe that fun hater should try shooting bputs!or maybe not, that leaves more for the rest of us!

yep shooting like a lever gun,,if it makes you unhappy and you want to cut her loose,,lever guns in pistol calibers are legal here in the hoosier,,so if the price is right I'll give her a good home..I like the idea of that first shot being right on!!!

Medaryville,,100 miles north of Indy..most of the idjets around here are still plugging away with slug guns and front stuffers,,the ML are accurate enough its just that they are so filthy and smokey ..and until we can roll our own sabot slugs I can't trust them..congrats to the missus and your son..in the photo section I have put a photo of a nice 8pt my brother got with his hot dog Savage stryker pistol,,I keep telling him it ain't fair..but it works good..taker easy fellow hoosier

I chronographed some factory Winchester loads (45 gr bthp) which Winchester says delivered 4000 fps from their test barrel. I got a hair over 3400 fps out of the Striker (12" bbl) which was about what I expected. I then loaded a bunch of cases from the factory ammo using a Winchester large rifle primer, a 55 gr Sierra bthp behind 34 gr BLC-2 (Hodgdon's max load). These loads chronographed at under 2400 fps, but Hodgdon predicted 3600 fps. If I account for the shorter bbl at approximately the same percentage as for the 45 gr factory loads, I would predict a hair over 3000 fps. I've disassembled a couple of the loads to eliminate the possibility that the scale got moved somehow, but the charge weighed as expected. Does anyone have any ideas about where the 600 fps went?

I've seen something similar to this with some of my reloads. When I talked to our local reloading guru, he suggested that I get a different lot of powder to see if that made a difference. it did for me.

Thanks for the post. Turns out the powder was too slow and a lot of it was burning in the muzzle flash. Spectacular, but not contributing to the velocity. I got some powder that was on the fast end of the recommended loads (Benchmark and 3031) and tried another chronograph session. Results were better, around 3000fps with 55 gr. bullets. The factory 45 grain loads were going about 3600 so this seems more reasonable. I'm working on an accuracy load now.

I mentioned a year ago of a site in our front driveway that I think is rarely seen about coyote taking a deer in our front yard here are pics of the feast taken from the front window of our place. a young buck was chased from a field to our west and up a treed hill accross our driveway where it lost it's footing and was killed by a pack of yotes where you see it in the pics. As we are on dial up out here in the sticks the video that I took would take me forever to upload.

CRAP-O-RAMA IT'S COLD

I have been working in the far eastern part of Utah -- the Unitah Basin since August '08. Now a days it is so cold here the coyotes have been hybernating I think. I call with my best calls and they don't respond at all. Dying rabbit, howlers nothing works. Maybe my calls are freezing as they come out of the instrument and will thaw sometime in April or May. It is -12º at night and the high for the day is 6º or 7º above zero. I don't want to work every day I would like to go shoot something once every two weeks or so. Nothing out there. Feel sorry for me all you warm weather guys. Gracias a Guadelupe this job will be over in mid-Feb. and I can go back to the desert north of Las Vegas and the coyotes that don't get hit by cars on I-15 can be targets of opportunity.

Festive greetings from the GWN (Great White North)where the denizens are hardy and the wildlife even hardier as evidenced by the red squirrel running in one of my Ponderosas this AM. Temp about minus 24 with windchill minus 36C (that's about minus 15 and close to minus 30F for u foreigners. We have made an amazing discovery....it has been determined that since all male Reindeer shed their antlers by this time of year, all Santa's propellers must be female. makes sense, doesn't it? Who other than a female could ensure that a gassy old fat guy gets home at night? Only about 36 hours to go before lift-off so have to go spread a little hay around. Best o' the season to one and all (including all of those heathen beggars that live in "the box")

Advantages of being resident of the GWN. Firstly we celebrate Boxing Day (Brit tradition when day after Xmas, gifts were "boxed" for the needy). Secondly, many of my ancestors populated the prairies and of consequence, we here informally celebrate Ukrainian Christmas; tonight is Christmas Eve so once again Merry Xmas. Thirdly, we are the best friggin junior hockey players in the Word for the fifth consecutive year.

Well, 2009 is almost here and 2008 is going in the history books. May all of you shoot straight and have a great '09.

My New Year's resolution is going to be to get out as much as humanly possible to rid the earth of as many groundhogs as I can here in PA. I also am going to do my best to exterminate any Prairie Poodles that I may come across on my next trip to WY.

What distances do u experience in PA? Do u have enuff rm 4 ur 6.5 (oops sorry, ur .260.) Mellon..is that the same place they used to call the Igloo? Haven't been there in decades, but saw 71 take a holding two minutes to "show shame" that led to Les Habs 2nd goal last Sat.

We get Yel Low bellies (Marmots) up here in mtns but rarely do we get really long shots and I much prefer heading back east for the littler dirt devils. Frequency and degree of difficulty are the big attraction.

Darn near bikini weather up here. Gals are honing up the razor blades (carbide) and melting beeswax; only minus two Centigrade (about 31F).

Best o' the Season to u and urs (y'all) except that imported naturalized Scotsman named Craig Ferguson that makes fun of our Canuck accents!

I can get out to 450yds. most places I hunt here in SW PA. I haven't tried the .260 here yet, finished it too late in the season, but I think I'll use it for the windy days where the .22-250 and .243 won't perform so well.

The Mellon Arena is indeed the old "Igloo". It was oopened in 1968. The dome is retractable to open up about 80% but hasn't been opened in decades (it doesn't work very well and costs too much to re-seal it). The new "Consol Enegy Arena" has broken ground and is due to open in 2011. Woo-Hoo!

I agree Malkin did some stupid things the other night, but he is young and is only getting better. He still leads for the Art Ross, and he plays on the second line. Only plays with Crosby on PP's and special situations (when we are down a goal in the last minutes of the game). I hope these two teams meet in the playoffs again. It would make for some great hockey.

Stay warm up there in the Great White North. Was 70deg.f here Monday but is going back down to normal temps by the new year (highs of mid 30'S).

Too bad u r not in my Nation's seat of Gov't tonight (19:00) for the IIHF World Jrs. Championships; US vs Can in Round Robin. Maybe ur ESPN, which our TSN is affiliated to, might have satellite feed. Kids haven't lost all their teeth yet, so it may be of interest to those with a blood thirst awaiting start of NFL post season. You all have weight advantage, but we are of course bi-lingual and prone to dropping gloves (but we can't in IIHF sanctioned matches)

Just read this AM that Jose Canseco was knocked TU (Canuck term, sanitized version Torso Up)by ex-NFL'r weighing in at mere 205 lbs. This was supposed to have happened at some charity event...did not hear of this up north until today.

Plus two C outside and melting. Squirrels still looking for their nuts and I'm off on daydream again trying to imagine 315 pound Nose Guard on skates....Hmm pound for pound, the age old question about toughness....MLB (lol), NFL, NBA, NHL and one I throw in PRA (rodeo bull riders). Best of the Season to all my good neighbours.

I have been able to catch some of the IIHF on the NHL Network. I get it on Direct TV. Some great stuff. Going to be some great players in the NHL in the years to come.

I always said the NHL'ers were the toughest, but now that you mention it, those cowboys are some of the toughest men in the world. Never really got to see a rugby game, but I hear it's a brutal game.

Oh Flightless Bird Worshipper just be thankful Gore is chubby and Sid the Kid is a wonder with vulcanized rubber. Forgot to mention on orig post that our Canuck Squirrels must be very advanced as they've taken to freezing their nuts this year. Today much warmer in the high country only about minus ten (plus 15 or so old school way of thinking).

Just be grateful u do not live in Big D (even tho' I do possess Stan Cup worn jersey signed by Daryl Sydor from few yrs ago 'cause I used to work with his late Father-in-Law) because due to fact my great Grandparents from near same neck of the woods as Evegeni, I have hard time translating "sloppy seconds" into any Slavic based language.

Look up Non Sequitur (the comic strip) today on-line. It deals with my view on certain 'Varmints'.

We won't bother to translate our convers to anyone not in close proximity to the 49th or a local ice rink....Best of the Season...

PS: I have a cousin Evgeni but they've Anglicized it to Eugene. Third generation resident but only second generation specialized Varmint Shooter.
