Personal experience with our Health Care System (Canadian)(Thank you Keifer Sutherland's Grand Dad) Nov 2008 hurt my knee hunting, eventually convinced Doctor I required Orthopaedic Surgeon consult and appointment made Jun 2009. Eventually got to see the cutter Nov 2009, who even after I suggested that I required procedure to rectify injury, declined. He insisted on series of painful Cortisone injections. The injections did little to correct the situation. Still no MRI was ordered but finally yesterday 2010 Jan 26th, the cutter agrees with my initial assessment to correct what he thinks is a torn carilage. Still no MRI! He hopes to have the procedure done "this block" which he explained to me meant by the end of April, but he instructed me not to be too eager as it was unlikely to be done due to the back-up.

This has been a pain not only in the knee but a little higher as well!

That is what scares me about "Obamacare". They say this won't happen so it probably will. Long waits for care and sub-par care at that.

We all know how well that system worked. And all this time I thought it was my growing older that made me so cranky!

I have been having issues with my knee for a while.

January 8th, 2010 I mentioned this to my Doc at my yearly physical checkup. Before I left the office I had an MRI scheduled for:

January 13th, 2010 (the following Wednesday).

January 15th, 2010 I had the results back - a torn medial meniscus. I get an appointment with an Orthopedic Dr for the following Monday

January 18th, 2010 I see the Orthopedic surgeon and he says surgery is certainly indicated. The Meniscus is torn, this is a condition that gets worse over time, AND the loose piece of the Meniscus can cause additional damage to the cartilage in the joint. The prognosis is that I'll be in better shape within two weeks after surgery. Surgery is scheduled for:

January 22nd, 2010 I go in for surgery and expect to be walking on the leg that day. No so fast! There is significant additional damage seen in the cartilage at the end of the Femur. That damage is cleaned up a bit, and due to the good condition of the rest of the joint I have the opportunity for a REPAIR. The surgeon does so on the spot which requires that I keep off the leg for four weeks.

TWO WEEKS from the day that I mention I'm having knee issues to get surgery and a fix.

ObamaCare? I don't think so!!!!

What makes it worse is that you have insurance. However, those without insurance ALREADY GET CARE ALMOST ON PAR with what you experienced. EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES (including those without any form of insurance) gets vastly superior medical services compared to ANYONE in Canada.

ObamaCare: it's a bad idea.

Aside from (not so) regular check-ups, this is about the only "health care" that I have used in the last decade or two. My regular health insurance payments throughout my working life have been subsidizing others who have needed it more than I.... and also helping foot the bill for people who have no insurance.

Any emergency-room doctor will tell you they never get paid for at least half the work they do, so those that do pay have to make up for those who don't.

The current system is "broken"....... still, it is clearly a much better system than Socialized, Government-Controlled Medicine.

I moved just last November, so getting the reloading stuff set up again would be good. I'm low on varmint ammo and this is a concern.

Tieing flies? I do have a fly rod and fly-tieing stuff, though Central Texas is not the best place for trout streams. Heck - every body of water around here is man-made!
I'd need to spend significant time learning the fly rod, too. I've been fishing since a very young age, though running the 'ol Zebco 303 and a fly reel are two different things.

Talked with for the sake of a not better descriptor, an admitted "Socialist" - an otherwise reasonably intelligent guy except for the fact he also is in favor of gun control (I admit I like to twist his mind). Understandably, he has family member that requires a great deal of medical care and that may effect his position. He claims that medical insurance in States is prohibitively expensive, citing fact that his sister (nurse) and her husband long ago worked in Houston where they had to pay $300/month each for med insurance. He claims that unless insurance is subsidized no normal joe can afford it. He also claims that someone near Yuma recently had two ambulance rides and was billed over 20 thousand dollars for the ambulance. I cannot fire back without some ammo, so what I am looking for is some substantiated first hand data without going to some unknown website that may spew rhetoric. Common-sense tells me that med insurance cannot be as he put it "Prohibitively expensive". Right now I do not care if it is expensive as I am contemplating flying down to Seattle to pay for an MRI.

Talked to another guy today that lived/worked Phoenix for several years for a NGO and he advised me that it cost him $600/month for his family (four) and that was with $1,000.xx deductible and specificed what he termed "catastrophic injury". He is Canadian and I am wondering if there is a differentiation for foreign nationals being insured as opposed to ur citizens.
The way I view it combining med/dent care for about 15Gs a year seems about right, but shud that ever occur here, I doubt that we would ever see that 15Gs being reflected in tax savings.

That's about right for a family of four.

Yeah, it's expensive, but not as expensive as a felony charge for making an "end-run" around the system rather than waiting in-que for five years.

I don't see how $4000/person/year is more expensive than no treatment under a government plan, health care rationing, government medical board review committees, etc., etc.

$4000/person/year is looking cheaper every day.

Just read how part of the proposed bill will charge some people a 40% of the value of health care tax on benefits costing over a certain amount. You would also pay a tax (penalty) if you decide not to carry and insurance at all.

On-going discussion re Pros/Cons...my left leaning friend, who's spouse is wheel-chair bound and on respirator indicates to me that if they were residing in States, an HMO would have the right to cancel insurance due to the long-term care required for his wife. He indicates that they would be reduced to the level of being paupers were they to live in the States and that is his primary motivation. I am not fully conversant with the legalities of your HMO contracts, however I should think that there should be a rider in-place providing for such an exigency. I empathize with any family that are suddenly stricken with a disease/injury that requires long-term-extended care. Why should any family be burdened/devastated. My friend, also retired cop, was diagnosed with A-1 Anti-Tripsen deficiency. Before he could get a new lung, his meds (Canadian Cost) were in vicinity of 10 large a month. He waited several years prior to receiving a transplant and still more meds. His transplant extended his life but a few years but long enough to see his son graduate and he presented his son with his badge. He also lived long enough to hold his new grandson. Given the circumstances of this scenario, I wonder what would have happened if his health care was to be determined by an HMO whose primary concern is making money.
Maybe that is why we are so freaking polite! Altruism is alive and well, at least in Western Canada. I think I was over twenty years old before I heard someone say "Eh?" and that was an Easterner. I'm older than dirt and have yet to hear another Canuck pronounce "about" as "aboot"....and that included Newfies.

That's just straight speculation, so I wouldn't believe any of it.

I do know that the dirt poor in America get all the health care that our Beloved Leader and his lackies are claiming they are getting screwed out of. We've already got Socialized Medicine in MedicAid and MediCare. We've got emergency room personnel who, by law, cannot refuse treatment. Mexican Nationals come across the boarder to get some of the finest health care in the world at no charge.

What's the difference between being "reduced to living at the level of paupers" and getting the best health care in the world versus getting to maintain your standard of living and being in an eight-month que for the treatment you badly need while your life dwindles away? Each country may only choose one.

A co-workers daughter fell and banged her head hard at day care and was sent to emergency room. The 25 mile ride in the big truck with lights cost him just over $800.00 U.S. That's rural Nebraska VFD to Omaha.

More fuel for ur fire...it is now reported that the Premier of our Province of Newfoundland has gone to the U.S. for heart surgery!

What more can u say to counteract THAT! Why would one of the leaders of one of your States (Governor) come to Canada for heart surgery?

I can just imagine Arh noold coming to B.C. for surgery, chomping his stogey, glancing over his shoulder and saying in his Austrian accent..."Ah'll be baack".

With our luck, you guys'll probably kick our butts in game three of the Olympics hockey round-robin and we'll have real reason to hang our heads in shame.

FINALLY... nearly two years after injury; over a year since finally getting a referral from my GP and over nine months since first seeing Orthopod....ahhhh...surgery has been sched for later this month. It may screw-up my Fall fly fishing, but hopefully not the White Tail season in Alta. in Nov.

Thank-you to "Socialized" medicine for your prompt attention to my pain and suffering.

Glad to hear you are finally going to get the treatment you needed. I now have found out that my employer will be required to put how much he spent on my health care in my W-2 (tax statement). This will be added into my gross salary, putting me in a much higher tax bracket. Woo Hoo. Now we see who is going to pay for all the health care. I AM.
