Coyote kill

On Sunday at 4 am, My wife let our Shizu/Bichon dogs out for their morning pee. Our place is surrounded by heavy bush and we have seen coyotes deer and moose move through our property on a regular basis. Our black dog took off through the bush chasing something and didn't come back. My wife tried to call him back but no success. She woke me up and I called still no success. We waited for first light, hauled out the snow machine and went for a tour. On the north end of our woods, I dismounted and walked the edge of the woodline looking for blood. At this time I told her that I thought that coyotes may have taken our dog, pepper.
Anita took the snow machine and followed a trail leading into a depression that ends about 75 to 100 meters north of the house. I heard her scream as she found pepper. As I suspected, pepper was killed by coyotes. I set up a blind and called from 3 pm to dark with no results. these coyotes are hard to hunt and any hints would be greatly appreciated gents. If anyone living in the sherwood park area wishes to hunt out here just let me know and I'll tag along.

Try to find a good sized carcass and hang it in a tree just out of coyote reach (they reach higher than you think) Make sure it is well away from your home so you arent attracting unneeded critters into your yard. Set up a blind (downwind) make it from natural stuff and get the coyotes comin in regular, get them used to eating at that spot. Then sit in your little blind and kill them. For me nothing ever worked better than a carcass. And a spotlight.

I've hung a rabbit carcasse in a tree about 4 ft off the ground and a blind about 50 yards away. I have to use a .22 ruger due to the location of other houses in the vicinity. I suppose I could use my black powder and shoot from that same range but the little .22 is much more accurate than the big 50 cal muzzle loader.

Trooper, if ur range est is accur, use ur goose gun with #2s or 4s full choke; the bonus is quick follow-up. Potential for ricochets far is less. Pelt retention is of no concern is it? If that is case, be advised there are no nursing coyotes. Shud a WIA escape, others will turn on it and do your job for you.

Four feet not quite high enough but lay down some blood on the ground. Dead stock carcasses with certain "additives" work the best but require keeping domestic canines indoors for a long period of time.

Like gophers, no matter how many you manage to take out, there'll always be a new crop next year.

Many years ago, yotes took one of my daughter's dogs while we were at a range round-up. She is over thirty now and I still haven't told her how her dog died.

I'm not to far from you. Between Gibbons and Redwater. Here is some info that I have on baiting them in which has been quite successfull. So far I've smacked 11 off of the "meatsickle" this year.

My wife, Anita and I talked about the circumstances with loosing Pepper, I may have been wrong about coyotes killing the dog. Now, it seems, that pepper may have been killed by Deer! They have been entering our yard, feeding on bird seed that Anita puts out for them.
There was no coyote tracks in the soft snow, although if there were, we wouldn't have seen them as the snow collapsed on any tracks on that trail. However there were plenty of deer track in the area. Coyotes would have taken Pepper away from the kill site. Pepper was left where he died. And, on reflection, the dog may have been struck on the head by a hoof.

I have just read an article in the Pennsylvania Outdoor News that a study on coyote predation revealed that common house cats were found to be a favorite food of these canines. In some areas, cats accounted for 40% of their entire diet! The study didn't reveal what most thought...that coyotes were responsible for many fawn kills. Seems they don't kill nearly as many deer as most believe.

Yotes take cats/small dogs where I live and many times people reported Satanic cults dismembering cats. Close necropsies revealed canine teeth (Yotes/Domestic dogs) were likely culprits. My daughter lost one of her Shelties to Yotes.
Just a couple of weeks ago, several deer were noted in my yard at 01:04 hours. I tried to take some photos that did not turn out, but the little house dog became interested and went out while I snapped away. Deer were not perturbed by the little hound and one big doe (Muley) actually began to walk toward the dog until she detected my presence some forty feet away.
White Tail far more aggressive so it is feasible they may have stomped the little dog. I'm presuming Trooper (as I recall resides nr Hwy 28) is talking 'bout WT. It's been more than half a century since I hunted there (mostly ducks/geese)nr Josephsburg if my memory hasn't rotted away and I do not recall too many Mules in that area.

Red Dog you are right. There are many WT in the area however, we've seen a growing number of Mule deer just east of us near Tofield and a Muley buck around our place last October. I shot one three years ago just south of Tofield.
Someone said that the Mule deer are moving north and crowding out the white tails. Not so convinced about that.
