9. My son, Kevin, and I in a stubble field with a fox. "When it's early in the winter (or after the snow has begun to melt in the spring) it's very difficult to spot the animals in the long stubble. We need about a foot and a half of snow in order to force the foxes above the stubble and into view. Then you can often see them from a long way away-with a decent spotting scope or binoculars. This area was so plentiful with foxes that it didn't pay to try calling. Driving and spotting seemed most efficient. Unfortunately, some foxes would first be spotted as a red streak about 400 yards away. But they're the ones that lived to breed another day."
